Adıyaman: Kingdom of Komagene

Adiyaman is located to the west of the Southeastern Anatolia Region. The history of Adıyaman, which is one of the oldest settlements in the world, dates back to the first ages. This city is an important culture and tourism city which has been the center of many different cultures. The excavations carried out in this region showed that there were many rich cultures in this region, inall stages of human history.

Adiyaman has been home to the Hittites, Mittans, Urartians, Assyrians, Med and Komagene Kingdoms throughout history. It was dominated by the Great Seljuk Empire in the 11th century and later by the Anatolian Seljuk State. 

Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Turkish-Islamic works can be seen in the region.

There are many historical places and cities in Adıyaman. Nemrut Dağı, which is in the UNESCO World Heritage List, attracts many local and foreign cultural tourists to the region.

The Sanctuary at the top of Mount Nemrut

The sanctuary at the top of Mount Nemrut was built by Antiochos I for himself as a funerary monument.

Arsameia Archaeological Site

The ruins of Arsamcia are 60 km from Adiyaman city center.

According to King Antiochos’s inscriptions, Arsameia Archaeological Site was founded in the east of Kahta River by Arsemia, the ancestor of the Kommagene in the early 2nd century BC.

It was the summer capital and administrative center of the kingdom.

Ancient City of Perre

Perre Ancient City is 5 km from Adiyaman city center.

Turus Rock Tombs

Located 40 km from Adiyaman city center and 1 km west of the Adiyaman Sanliurla highway, Turus Rock Tombs date back to the Roman Period.

Transportation

There is an airport in Adıyamanda (Adıyaman Airport). However, this airport is only available for domestic flights. Therefore, those who want to come from outside Turkey, it is advisable to use indirect flights via Istanbul or Ankara.

However, it is also possible to use Gaziantep International Airport and come from Gaziantep to Adıyaman by bus or other land vehicles.
